The aim of this study is to determine the initial diagnostic efficacy of emergency colonoscopy in the assessment of hematochezia and for this 15 patients with low intestinal bleeding, who required hospitalization, were studied. 12 emergency colonoscopies were performed, after anterograde preparation of the colon with polyethylene glycol, which was considered between regular and good in 84%, with minimal side effects and no complications. In five patients (42%), a precise etiological diagnosis was obtained and in two (16%) probable, which results in a relative diagnostic efficiency of 58% and there were no complications during the procedure. The emergency colonoscopy is the method that offers the greatest potential for the diagnosis of low intestinal bleeding in our environment.
