Infection with herpes simplex virus type II causes between 40% and 90% of the ulcerative lesions of the female genital tract, which indicates that the genital herpes virus has spread in epidemic proportions, on a par with other sexually transmitted diseases. For this reason the idea of carrying out an investigation was born taking vaginal cytologies to women who are at high risk of contracting the virus, to interpret those cytopathic changes that indicate the possible presence of HSV II, using as a diagnostic method, initially, a coloration routine (PAP). Only in cases where vesicles were observed was the special staining of hematoxylin eosin (H-E). Samples from 400 patients were analyzed and the results showed that the incidence of HSV II is low, probably thanks to the correct application of prevention and promotion programs for sexually transmitted diseases, established by the Ministry of Health.
