Evaluation of hyaline membrane disease in newborns
Evaluación de la enfermedad de membrana hialina en recien nacidos
Show authors biography
To assess the incidence of hyaline membrane disease (HMD), characterize the population at risk, evaluate the treatment established and the most frequent complications in newborns, a retrospective descriptive study was conducted in the patients who were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Neonatal (NICU) of the Hospital of San Jose. All patients in whom EMH was clinically and paraclinically diagnosed were included, who were divided into four groups according to weight. The collected data showed a higher incidence of EMH in those under 1,000 g (63%), compared to those greater than 1,500 g (5%). The complication found most frequently was chronic lung disease of the newborn (24%), followed by pneumothorax (21%) .In the study, mortality was (33.5%) ), which is greater than that reported in the world literature, possibly secondary to the high incidence of complications, especially in patients under 1,000 g Finally, management strategies are proposed to reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients with EMH.
