The International League Against Epilepsy proposed a new classification of epilepsy in 2001, supported by five axes that reflect the findings so far known. The results of its application are reported in patients who come to the neurology clinic of the Hospital of San José de Bogotá D.C. It is a prospective descriptive observational study. A total of 95 cases were included, observing the highest frequency of presentation of the first seizure in the range of 10 to 20 years, of which 98.9% presented with active epilepsy. The coincidence between ictal semiology (axis 1) and type of crisis (axis 2) was 87.4%. The epileptic syndrome (axis 3) was partial in 31.6% and generalized in 64.2% of the cases. The most identified etiology (axis 4) corresponded to chromosomal abnormalities in 29.5% and was not recognized in 41.1%. When evaluating the degree of affectation of the subject (axis 5) with the QOLIE-31 questionnaire, its application allowed to quantify the quality of life and we considered that its use would allow to optimize the management of the patients. In general, the majority could be categorized with this classification proposal in a similar way to when the previous two classifications ILAE 1981 and 1989 were applied. Abbreviations: ILAE, international league against epilepsy.
