Objective: to review the literature on difficult airway in the emergency department, predictors and rescue measures when it occurs. Materials and methods: MEDLINE, EBSCOhost, SpringerLink and ScienceDirect were reviewed under the terms difficult airway, difficult airway, prolonged intubation, prolonged intubation, difficult intubation, difficult intubation, management of dificult airway, airway management and pathway predictors. difficult air, from the year 2000 to 2014 in English or Spanish. Results: 16 prospective descriptive studies were found, 10 subject reviews, 7 database records, four transversal descriptive, four comparative, three randomized blind, two clinical practice guidelines, two series, a case report, two retrospective analyzes and A case-control study. Conclusions: most of them have been performed in anesthesiology, although in the emergency room there are good success rates in difficult airway. Greater prediction of the easy airway has been achieved. It is impossible in the emergency department to determine ideal variables that are obtainable, interpretable and reliable, nor are local studies on the subject found. The management of the difficult airway in the emergency room benefits from the joint participation of specialties such as emergency medicine, anesthesiology and surgery, but it is necessary to implement low-cost strategies other than direct laryngoscopy that have shown benefit in the patient's prognosis. Abbreviations: VAD, difficult airway.
