Objective: to determine the risk factors of bronchiolitis in children under two years of age who visited the emergency department of the San José Hospital of Bogotá DC between 2013 and 2014. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study through interviews with the companions and analysis of the clinical histories. The frequency of consultations in children under two years was recorded. Results: 127 patients with a prevalence of 2.8% were recruited. The median age was 4 months (RI 2-8 months), mostly men n: 74 (58.27%), the risk factors were low birth weight n: 26 (20.47%), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) positive n: 24 (18.9%) and prematurity n: 20 (17.54%). Schooling of the mother (secondary) n: 76 (59.84%), 73.8% came from low-income households (1-2) frequent factor in our population, siblings enrolled n: 82 (64.57%) and exposure to tobacco smoke n: 22 (17.32%). The months of greatest consultation were March n: 34 (26.77%), April n: 27 (21.26%) and July n: 27 (21.26%). The median length of hospital stay was five days (RI 3 - 7 days). Conclusions: the most frequent etiology was RSV; palivizumab was used in 7.09% of patients. The prevention will be based on interrupting the transmission with washing techniques and reduction of environmental risk factors, while the development of the vaccine is achieved. Abbreviations: RSV, respiratory syncytial virus.
