Abstract

In order to evaluate the influence of a re-training program on the theoretical and practical knowledge of peritoneal fluid replacement in peritoneal dialysis patients from the renal unit of San Carlos Hospital, the present study was carried out in 35 patients, aged 18 years. to 76 years and with a time in the program of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) greater than two months. It is a descriptive, quantitative, quasi-experimental and longitudinal study. Two instruments were applied, a questionnaire to evaluate the theoretical knowledge and a checklist to evaluate the peritoneal replacement technique. The instruments were applied before and after the retraining program. When applying the first ones, it was observed that 55% of the patients have good theoretical and practical knowledge of the peritoneal exchange, 26% showed a regular practice and only 3% deficiencies in the theory; Based on these results, we saw the need to reinforce this knowledge through a program, retraining the 35 patients. After the retraining program, the change in theoretical and practical knowledge was observed, the deficient range disappearing in the evaluation of the theoretical knowledge and the regular one decreasing in practice by 50%. For the analysis of statistical data SPSS and Excel programs were used, using tables and charts of boxes. It was concluded that the retraining program had a positive influence on the theoretical and practical knowledge of peritoneal replacement as patients modified their behaviors improving the categories of good and excellent. Abbreviations: CAPD, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis; APD, peritoneal dialysis automates.
