Abstract

Descriptive study at the Aldeas Infantiles institution in the Las Cruces neighborhood of Bogotá DC. (Colombia). It aimed to describe and confirm the frequency of visual disturbances in children between six months and eleven years of age. Screening tests for visual defects were applied to 101 children of socioeconomic status one and two, according to their age (six months to two years, three to four years, five to six years and over six years). The results indicate that this population has a prevalence of visual defects similar to that found in other studies and that sick children do not have the appropriate correction or treatment to prevent major defects in the future. The aim is to encourage the screening of children by trained medical personnel for the early detection of preventable visual disturbances.
