Abstract

Objective: to describe the findings of the ECG in patients over 18 years of age with syncope on admission to the emergency room, between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013, at the San José Hospital in Bogotá DC. Materials and methods: a retrospective cross-sectional study with data on clinical sociodemographic variables and ECG findings reported independently by an emergency doctor and a cardiologist. Results: 60 patients met the criteria according to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology. The most frequent ECG findings were changes in the QT interval (11.7%), sinus bradycardia (6.7%), bifascicular block (5%), second-degree atrioventricular block (1.7%), nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (1.7%), Q waves suggestive of myocardial necrosis (1.7%) and other changes (20%). The agreement between general practitioner versus cardiologist was 41.5%. Conclusion: the median age and gender are similar to those reported in other studies, but there is a noticeable difference in the interpretation of the ECG between the emergency physician and the cardiologist, which can change the prognosis and increase the probability of negative outcomes. Abbreviations: ECG, electrocardiogram (s).
