Abstract

The omphalocele is a congenital defect of the abdominal wall, of infrequent presentation, that can be associated with another type of genetic malformations. The management is surgical and consists in the reduction of the herniated viscera to close the fascia and the skin, although the giant omphalocele represents a bigger problem due to the size of the defect, for which the primary closure must often be deferred. We present a newborn with prenatal diagnosis of giant omphalocele who underwent medical management with silver sulfadiazine to epithelize the sac with adequate success, managing to defer surgical management. Abbreviations: OG, giant omphalocele (s).
